Derek McElheron

Derek treats his subjects with an honesty and directness that lends his pictures a sense of immediacy and realism, even when his approach is more abstract.  His art has a precision that creates in the viewer a feeling of serenity and balance.  He chooses subjects that have emotional  resonance for him, plants, gardens and animals, both wild and domestic.  He also enjoys pet portraiture.

Derek was born in Montreal and studied art at John Abbott College.  Previously a  practicing lawyer, Derek had a collapse.  He decided during his rehabilitation to focus on the creative aspects of life and rediscovered his love of art.  He initially joined AHA as part of his rehabilitation and is now one of its key artists and mentors. .  Derek has had numerous shows and has been featured at the Deer Lake Gallery and other locations in the lower mainland.  His work can be found in private collections throughout Canada.
